An Outcry in Education

Education is one of the essential tools to live in a modern time like this, yet, it is a painful scenery now in the eyes of our children—an outcry to us parents, to see them sitting for more than eight hours just to achieve the academic progress they should be enjoying at this time.

Yes! it was hard, problems arose like internet connection, inappropriate gadgets, or worst, no gadget at all. I thought modernization will help me as a mother to provide better education for my children, but technology makes my problem worse. My child needs my assistance in times that I’m supposed to be working as well. At his early age of 7, he needs my assistance to operate a computer and be in a Google Classroom and Meeting Class in order for him to be engaged with this so called “Online Distance Learning” wherein they are supposed to be enjoying learning with other kids, playing while singing ABC and kids songs, counting numbers 1, 2, 3, but it was different — a different dimension of education that I was not expecting at all.

This pandemic caused so much trouble to me, and I know I’m not the only one who is suffering, and I know many suffer more than I do. I am not complaining, I’m just worried how my son will develop the life that we had before this pandemic. I wish we can go back to that much awaited “normal life” we had before this pandemic—a life that is not  dependent on a computer, but a life with engagement, a life full of excitement.

Little by little, I’m starting to cope with what they call the “New Normal” in our educational situation, but can you blame me for still looking for progress? We are not ready, and no one was ready with what happened, but we finished a year of Online Distance Learning, yet, still the same problem kills us. Many still have hardships dealing with this kind of  system of education and it seems like we learned nothing from the last academic year.

It will not be easy, and I do understand but how can I explain to my seven-year-old son who’s in grade one that his class works like high school students: attending classes every morning, activities during the class, and more offline activities to be finished and need to be submitted after class. I can’t blame him that there are times he loses his patience and willingness to study. An activity like making his own timeline wherein output has been made by us parents just to be sure our children won’t be left out with an undone activity.  It was supposed to be fun, but it wasn’t—it’s a dilemma for a seven-year-old to do such things.

Regardless of what institution he belongs to, the same thoughts still go by for everyone in this educational situation we have right now. We must learn to embrace things that should only fit the needs, and not the wants. We should understand one another that it wasn’t easy, however, everyone aims to finish another academic year.  Albert Einstein once said “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge”. We may have different issues in life right now but we all have one common goal—for our children to be able to learn new things at the end of the day and to be able to finish one school year again
