MATATAG Curriculum Implementation in the Philippine Education System to Proceed Amid Rising Calls for Its Removal

The MATATAG Curriculum is the latest initiative to improve the knowledge and skills of Filipino students both in the local and global arena. Spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd), this updated curriculum will gradually be implemented across the Philippine education system beginning the School Year 2024-2025.

From its conceptualization to its implementation, the MATATAG Curriculum received a mixture of responses from the public and even experts in the field of education. One of these feedbacks include the mounting calls for its removal. However, DepEd explained that MATATAG will remain in the Philippines but indicated it could be open for potential adjustments.

MATATAG Curriculum to Continue

During a radio interview, the Philippines’ Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara clarified that despite the increasing demand for the removal of the MATATAG Curriculum, the latter’s implementation will continue, the state-owned Philippine News Agency reported. Still, Angara said the restructured curriculum will be open for potential adjustments to mitigate the burden on teachers. 

The DepEd head adds that his agency is assessing the matter but stated MATATAG will not be removed but it can be subjected to become more flexible and may depend on a school’s principal, as well as the new curriculum’s impact on teachers.

The MATATAG Curriculum addresses the evolving job market and demand, adding theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will help students of today and the future. According to the platform Asia Education Review, MATATAG focuses on life skills, math, and reading that are suitable for jobs and daily life.

As DepEd previously reported, the phased implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum will be from Kinder to Grade 10 from the S.Y. 2024-2025 to S.Y. 2027-2028. For the current school year, the revised curriculum will be applied for Kinder, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7. 

It will be followed by Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 8 in the S.Y. 2025-2026; Grade 3, Grade 6, and Grade 9 in the S.Y. 2026-2027; and Grade 10 in the S.Y. 2027-2028.
