School Year 2024-2025 Opens with Around 20 Million Students Amidst Typhoon Carina and Southwest Monsoon

School Year 2024-2025 in the Philippines opened on Monday, July 29, with around 20.5 million
learners. According to the Department of Education (DepEd), these students have been enrolled
across the Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High School levels, as well as under the Alternative
Learning System (ALS).

However, some schools were not able to open due to the impact left by the recent flooding rain.
Less than a week ago, floodwaters caused by heavy rain inundated Metro Manila, Bulacan, and other
parts of Luzon due to the combined forces of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon. Some
schools in the National Capital Region also became evacuation centers as residents fled from rising
waters.

School Year 2024-2025 Opening

Despite the recent storm, the School Year 2024-2025 successfully opened nationwide on Monday. In
a press release, DepEd recorded 20,598,072 enrollees for the current academic year. The enrollees

In Cavite, DepEd Education Secretary Sonny Angara observed the “smooth opening” of the academic
year during his visit to Carmona National High School and Elementary School despite a rainy Monday
morning. Angara also visited Muntinlupa National High School and Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial
National High School in Cavite.

Some Schools Delay Opening

Before the official start of the academic calendar year on Monday, it was reported that hundreds of
schools would be delaying their opening due to the effects of Typhoon Carina and the southwest
monsoon, as mentioned earlier. According to ABS-CBN News, some of the affected schools needed
to clean their premises which served as evacuation centers.

DepEd reported that the majority of 738 public schools that were unable to start the academic year
on Monday are situated in Central Luzon, including Metro Manila which was placed under a state of
calamity.
